JAMES J. GIFFORD Mr. James J. Gifford, a retired carpenter and builder, died yesterday at his home 1422 East Fayette street, aged eighty years. He was born where he died.
Mr. Gifford was the architect and builder of the old Ford’s Theatre in Washington, which was the scene of the assassination of President Lincoln. This was the building whose roof collapsed June 9, 1893, and caused the death of many government clerks and employes. When the building came into possession of the government the alterations necessary for converting it into a building for the conduct of public business were supervised by Mr. Gifford, at the request of the contractor for the work. Mr. Gifford was not satisfied with the manner in which the work was done, and protested against it without avail.
As master carpenter, Mr. Gifford erected for the late Noah Walker what is now known as the Sutro Building. He also took part in erecting the Holliday Street Theatre and Ford’s Grand Opera House in Baltimore, Harris, Brinton & Dean’s Theatre in Washington and many other well-known structures. He preserved the drawings of nearly all his work, and could explain all the details. He was stage carpenter at Ford’s Opera House up to fifteen years ago, when he retired from active pursuits. Mr. Gifford leaves a widow, two sons and five daughters.
MAX AFFELDER The funeral of Mr. Max Affelder took place yesterday from his home 1814 Madison avenue. Rev. Dr. Tobias Schanfarber officiated. Representatives were present from the following organizations: Albert Pike Lodge, Scottish Rite Masons; Lafayette Lodge of Masons; Pioneer Council, Legion of Honor; Maryland Council, Royal Areanum; Loyal Lodge, B’nai B’rith; Adoniram Chapter, Royal Arch Masons.
The honorary pall-bearers were: M. Friedman, representing the Hebrew Hospital; G. Eiseman, Hebrew Orphan Asylum; Julius Stetful, Hebrew Benevo’ent Society; S. Grinsfelder, B’nai B’rith; Mr. Larrabee, Albert Pike Lode, Masons; C. M. B. Glanville, Lafayette Lodge, Masons; M. Putzel and S. S. Auerbaeh, American Legion of Honor; H. Moritz, Royal Areanum; Elias Rohr, M. Brownold, Benjamin Rowenheim and Solomon Strauss.
The active bearers were: S. Janowitz, Emanuel Hess, Abraham Nachman, David Weisenfeld, Abraham Hutzler, Emanuel Hechheimer, Moses Pels and Hiram Friedenwald. The interment was at Har Sinai Cemetery. David Sondheim directed the funeral.
HENRY SHOOK Mr. Henry Shook, who died early Saturday morning, was buried yesterday afternoon in Baltimore Cemetery. Mr. Shook had been a watchman in the service of THE SUN since 1851. The funeral took place from his home, 33 (?) North Eden street. Rev. Joel T. Rossiter (?), pastor of First Reformed Church, conducted the services. Mr. Rossiter spoke of Mr. Shook’s fidelity to duty as a predominating trait in his character. “For many years, night after night,” said Mr. Rossiter, “Mr. Shook went to THE SUN office with punctuality. He had the interests of his employers at heart, and he guarded them well.” The pall-bearers were Messrs. Edward Crummer, George H. Karsner, John Pacaessy, George H. Whitney, Michael Donovan and Wm. E. Flaharty. Among those present were Messrs. Edwin F. and George W. Abell, W. H. Heindle, Wm. E. Cemm, Frederick Kerchner, Ferdinand Kerchner, Wm. Mavers and C. M. Cartwright. JAMES J. GIFFORD
The funeral of Mr. James J. Gifford, who died Monday, took place from 1422 East Fayette street yesterday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. Edward Huber, pastor of St. Matthew’s German Lutheran Church. The burial was in Greenmount.
The pall-bearers were Messrs. Wm. H. Weaver, Basil Moxley, J. B. Weaver, Wm. E. Flaherty, M. Donovan and William Lusby. George Schilling was the funeral director.
Mr. Gifford was eighty years old, and was a carpenter and builder. He was the architect and builder of the old Ford’s Theatre in Washington, where a number of government employes were killed June 9, 1893, by the falling in of a false floor, which had been placed in the building after it came into the possession of the government for use as the pension record office. When the accident occurred Mr. Gifford’s name became prominent from being the architect of the structure, but it was shown that it was from no faulty work of his that the accident resulted. Mr. Gifford superintended the changes necessary for converting the theatre into a building for government offices. He became dissatisfied with the manner in which the contractor wanted the work done but his protests were of no avail.
MRS. BRIDGE SPELLMAN Mrs. Bridge Spellman, wife of Mr. John Spellman, died last night at her home, 1136 East Fayette street, after a lingering illness. Mrs. Spellman was the mother of ex-Patrolman John J. Spellman, who was acquitted in the Criminal Court yesterday of unlawfully killing Jas. H. Clifford, as stated elsewhere in THE SUN today. Spellman, Mrs. George Trumbo and Mrs. William Miles.
MRS. ANNA H. SHARP Mrs. Anna Matthews Sharp, wife of Dr. A. P. Sharp, founder of the Sharp & Dohme Manufacturing Company, died at her residence, 2105 St. Paul street, yesterday morning.
